Markets and Timeframes
Listed below are the various markets we currently chart and the associated timeframes. Keep in mind that market conditions may result in a change of timeframes.
Note that in each market charted we use a minute chart as well as either a tick or volume chart. Minute charts reflect candlestick patterns better than tick or volume charts and it is important to be able to check a 15 minute or a 60 minute chart during the trading session.
Depending on your workspace we recommend using just one minute chart that can be toggled to view other timeframes. I personally have my minute chart setup so I can use my numeric keypad to quickly view a 2/3/5/9/15/30/60 and 203 minute chart. For the index markets I use primarily the 5 and 15 minute charts and will also look at the 60 minute chart and 203 minute chart during the trading session to keep an eye on the larger timeframe.
For crude, gold, and beans I will use combinations of 3/9 and 5/15/60 minute charts. For the two treasury markets I like the 15/60 minute charts. For the grains I prefer the 5/15 minute charts.

Thanks for the info, Rick…
but how on earth do you trade ALL those markets together?
And if not then what filter criteria do you use?

Nigel,
Good question. i don’t trade more than two markets at a time. I do chart a number of markets to look for opportunities but I am primarily trading the ER, ES, euro, crude. Periodically I trade the YM, NQ, bonds, and notes. The others infrequently.

Are you daytrading? Position trading? My preference is to look at various timeframes to find a quality setup and to have a higher timeframe to confirm the setup. If you are trading minute charts I would look at a 5 min/15 min/60 min at a minimum. Keep in mind that the markets are dynamic which means they are always changing. Some days you will see quality setups on the 5 min chart. other days you will need to look at another timeframe that ‘fits’ the action. If the market is moving with velocity you will need to look at a smaller timeframe such as a 2 min or even 1 minute chart.
Hope this helps!

Hi Trader Rick,
When you choose volume or tick charts, do you use the ATR indicator to help you come up with a good number tick or volume bar?

Sorry Trader Rick,
I just read more closely what you have above.
